Urban Design theme course

What would make a city better for its people? Whats my city like and how has it developed? What makes a city good for children? What is the best, happiest and smartest city for the future? In this five-day course, children will innovate and create ideas of their dream city. In addition, they will learn means and methods to influence the design of their future environment.

70 percent of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050. It will require commitment, consistency, community, and collaboration between all public and private stakeholders to develop smart, sustainable and happy cities. Participation of locals will be an important part of the decision-making process in shaping the best future city. The future quality of our environment will be determined by the children of today!

In Arkki “Happy city” theme course the participants will concentrate on varying needs of people; what kind of buildings, public spaces, services and infrastructure among others are needed for the future city and how to develop livable, smart, welcoming and sustainable city for all. This five-day course aimed at children between ages 8 and 14 leads participants to learn architecture and urban planning from history to the future visions with a participatory approach and gives the children ways and capabilities to observe and evaluate their surroundings. During the course, children discuss and express their ideas in a livable city – what are the most important factors for a future city for all?
